Malahide Castle Dublin
Situated north of the city lies a castle dating back to 1175. The Malahide Castle Dublin and its vast grounds is one of the oldest castles in Ireland. This popular tourist attraction is set in 260 acres and was home for the Talbot family for over 800 years.
Visitors to Malahide Castle Dublin can expect a magical experience exploring the castle and learning about the Talbot family. Knowledgeable guides offer guided tours in different languages.
Malahide Castle Dublin has a long and rich history and played a central role in Medieval Irish history. The oldest parts of the castle date back to the 12th century. The building was notably enlarged in the reign of Edward IV, and the towers added circa 1600-1650. The estate survived such losses as the Battle of the Boyne and the Penal Laws. It was home to the Talbot family for almost 800 years (1185 to 1975).
Malahide Castle was built by the Talbots, an English family holding the title Earls of Shrewsbury. They had arrived in England during the Norman invasion with William the Conqueror. The French origin of the name was Tailbois or Talebot. They had been Barons of Cleuville in Normandy before their arrival in England. Their name is thought to be first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086.

This famous painting is currently on loan from the National Gallery of Ireland, along with many other paintings and beautiful period furniture.
The Gardens & Demesne
The ornamental gardens adjoining the castle cover an area of about 22 acres and were largely created by Lord Milo Talbot. He was an enthusiastic plant collector who brought specimens from around the world to create the gardens here; he also re-landscaped the grounds here to dramatic effect.
In all there are in excess of 5000 difference species and varieties of plants present. The gardens are best described as a small Botanic garden. In addition to the abundance of flora our exhibition presents fascinating stories about the gardens, Milo and Rose and the wonderful world of southern hemisphere plants.
The Demesne and grounds have pleasant walks, play areas, picnic sites and cricket pitch as well as tennis courts, 9-hole golf course and an 18-hole pitch and putt course. The extensive system of pedestrian paths throughout the estate are perfect for walking and exploring this picturesque and tree lined park. While you are enjoying your walk you will notice several buildings of architectural and archaeological interest on the grounds of the Demesne.
